The historical and affective attachment of the Porto inhabitants to Brazil dates back, without exaggeration, to the moment when the land, that was then called Terra de Vera Cruz, was discovered. As it is known, the famous letter informing King Manuel I of the discovery "of that sort of terrestrial paradise", which would later become Brazil, was written by Porto-born Pero Vaz de Caminha, who belonged to the high society of this city where he held the office, among others, of Mint-master. The famous letter, written in Porto Seguro on 1 May 1500, may be regarded as the first page of Brazils History, since it is a lively, spontaneous and credible narrative of the uses, the food and clothing habits of the newly found people. This being the case, it is not unbecoming to affirm that the Portos inhabitants started to have an important place in the History of the brother country, right after the first moments the new land was "revealed" to the World. Thirty years after the arrival of the discovery letter to the kingdom, a new Fleet, now commanded by Martim Afonso de Sousa, left Portugal and sailed to Brazil. The boats carried the future settlers and soldiers and among them were many people from Porto, who remained there and would establish many of the families whose names still exist in todays Brazilian society. Of these Portuguese of old, the name of Brás Cubas is worthy of notice. He was a prestigious personality of Porto, to whom Brazil owes the foundation of the city of Santos. He left Porto at an early age but as soon as he arrived in Brazil he sent a message to the family he had left on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean convincing them to join him. He would become one of the most influent and richest men in the S. Vicentes captaincy
